The International ranking organization Times Higher Education has released its rankings for World Universities 2018. Only one Pakistani university breaks into top 500 World Ranking, NUST and COMSATS fall short.

Only one Pakistani university made it to the list of world’s top 500 universities. The only university able to make it to the top 500 is Quaid-e-Azam University Islamabad which has made a place in the 401-500 Band.

Unfortunately, the overall number of Pakistani universities decreased to just four universities while last year seven universities were placed in the top 1000 list of the world.

Times Higher Education (THE) is a reputable name when it comes to authentic university rankings. The rankings are based on several factors like academicians, industry personnel, and students all keep an eye on the numbers they release every year that collectively represent a varsity’s worth.

However, the latest ranking reveals that Pakistani universities have not progressed well. According to the report issued by Times Higher Education, four Pakistani universities made it to the top 1000 this year.

Quaid-e-Azam University Islamabad is single Pakistani university which made it to the top 500 varsities. Quaid-e-Azam University Islamabad showed significant improvement from their placement in the 601-800 Band last year.

Other two Pakistani universities COMSATS Institute of Information Technology and National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST) were placed in the 601-800 Band.

While the fourth and last Pakistani university on the list is the University of Agriculture Faisalabad, which is ranked in the 801+ group.

If Pakistan is compared against its neighbors, its neighbors performed well. Total 60 universities made it to top 1000 from China while 30 and 11 made it from India and Iran respectively.

THE Global Rankings Editorial Director Phil Baty expressed his disappointment on the lack of Pakistani universities and attributed it to lack of funding. However, he was of the opinion that China’s involvement in the country’s CPEC project could also bring good news for Pakistan’s academic institutions.

“The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor unveiled by Chinese president Xi Jinping in 2013 and now in its first phase of implementation has been touted as a potential way for Pakistan to build the technological capacity of its universities,” he said.

He also appreciated the effort by QAU in getting to top 500 despite the tough global competition.

Top spots in this year’s list were held by the University of Oxford, followed by the University of Cambridge, and the California Institute of Technology and Stanford University who shared the third spot.
