Islamabad authorities seized several vehicles operating under private taxi-hailing services Careem and City Cab in the federal capital.

After crackdown in Karachi and Lahore, authorities in Islamabad have also launched action against private transport companies. The unregistered vehicles are being considered a security risk.
The Islamabad deputy commissioner has given orders for crackdown against private companies providing transportation services using unregistered vehicles.
City authorities on Thursday seized several vehicles operating under taxi-hailing services Careem and City Cab in the federal capital.
Transport Authority secretary Jawad Muzaffar took action against unregistered taxi vehicles in Uber, Careem and other taxi providers. “The crackdown is not just against one or two companies. It is against all unregistered companies”, he told.
“These unregistered companies and vehicles can create issues regarding safety of lives and property of the masses,” a notification issued by the administration said.
On Monday, Punjab government declared the services of mobile-application taxi service providers Careem, Uber and A-One as illegal. The provincial government also stated that the failure of Uber and Careem to obtain required fitness certificates and route permits for their fleets had resulted in “great loss to the government.”
“It has been observed with grave concern that some companies including Careem, Uber, A-One etc are offering cab services through mobile network technology without registering the private cars with any regulatory body and without obtaining fitness certificate/route permits of these cars, causing great loss to the Govt”, according to a notification issued by the Punjab Transport Authority stated.
The Dubai-based Careem directly made inroads into markets in Karachi, Lahore and later Islamabad in October 2015 whereas San Francisco-based rival Uber began operations in Lahore in 2016.
