EU military chief visit to Pakistan opens new ways for collaboration

Chairman of European Union Military Committee discusses matters of mutual interests Pakistan’s military leadership

Chairman of the European Union Military Committee (EUMC), General Claudio Graziano, during his first official visit to Pakistan, lauded Pakistan’s anti-terrorism efforts and role in regional peace, paving the way for new collaboration between Pakistan and EU.

“Pakistan is playing an important role in maintaining peace and security We are ready to cooperate on the issue of terrorism from which Pakistan suffers,” said Gen. Claudio Graziano. He also appreciated Pakistan’s role in intra-Afghan dialogue and added that “EU can engage itself as a facilitator” in the Afghan process.

Chairman EUMC was speaking at a public talk on “The Role of the European Union in the Global Scenario” which was a part of Distinguished Lecture Series organized by the Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad (ISSI) on November 7.

He shared that during his Pakistan visit he held meetings with military leadership and discussed matters of mutual interests and defence collaboration with Pakistan’s military leadership.

During his talk, Gen. Graziano gave a detailed overview of the challenges of contemporary times and the EU’s evolving role in the military and strategic context. Describing the European Global Strategy, he said that, EU is currently planning to engage on global peace and security issues with the international community.

He briefed the audience about the strategic priorities of the EU, its increasing responsibilities, and the ever-increasing need to engage with its partners on the principle of strategic autonomy.

Ms. Androulla Kaminara, Ambassador of the European Union to Pakistan also spoke on the occasion. “EU is not just about trade and commerce only, but security and strategy as well. Security cannot be achieved without development” she stated. She welcomed any interaction with the Pakistani community on common security and foreign policy issues.

Earlier, Chairman ISSI, Ambassador Khalid Mahmood briefly touched upon the history of EU and the dream of a united Europe after the scourge of the two global wars. Contextualizing Pakistan-EU relations in the contemporary times, he focused on forces of xenophobia, populism, rising tide of anti-regionalism and dwindling economic cooperation. He said that these are the challenges that are clouding the prospects of European dream, as well as global peace and security.

The talk was followed by a short round of question and answer session regarding Kashmir issue, Afghan peace process and global role of EU.
