EzBike launches Pakistan’s first electric scooter with swappable batteries

Islamabad-based electric mobility startup EzBike launched Pakistan’s first electric scooter with swappable batteries, Electron, and introduced the country’s first battery swap station network.

All swap stations, batteries, and scooters have been manufactured in Islamabad. The company introduced the flagship scooter at a grand launch event on November 6 in Islamabad.

EzBike said in a statement that the company is on a mission to revolutionize transportation in Pakistan by making EV 2-wheelers accessible, affordable, and convenient for everyone.

Electron is 259% cheaper to purchase and 50% cheaper to operate as compared to a Honda CD70, the company claims.

Pakistan’s first Battery Swap Station Network

The company is building 40 ezSwap stations in Islamabad and Rawalpindi to allow Electron owners to exchange depleted batteries with fully charged new batteries in less than 30 seconds. By introducing electric bikes, the company is contributing to a cleaner, greener future for Pakistan, the statement added.

EzBike’s co-founder and CEO Mohammad Hadi said that he was proud to announce a ”pivotal moment in the transition to electric vehicles in Pakistan”. He added that “ezBike has launched the first EV ecosystem in the country, consisting of electric scooters with swappable batteries and the country’s first battery swapping station network.”

“Battery swapping is the catalyst that is driving the transition to EVs across Asia and Africa, as it makes EV adoption affordable and operationally feasible. We are so pleased to be bringing it to Pakistan,” Hadi added.

EzBike, launched by Islamabad-based startup Roamer Technologies, introduced Pakistan’s first fully electric bike service in Islamabad city offering an affordable, fast and eco-friendly commute. It was the first-its-kind e-bike sharing service launched in Islamabad in October 2020.

EzBike was founded in 2020 by Mohammad Hadi, a former investment banker, and Ali Moeen Malik, a software executive.

In 2022, EzBike raised $1 million in pre-seed funding from i2i Ventures, Walled City, and GroundUp. “With 22 million legacy motorcycles, Pakistan represents a $20-billion market opportunity for two-wheel electric vehicles, and skyrocketing petrol prices and air pollution rates make the need to transition to EV’s urgent,” according to EzBike’s co-founder and CEO Mohammad Hadi.

Electric scooters and bike industry in Pakistan

EzBike is one of the many companies that have launched or are in the phase of launching electric scooters and bikes in Pakistan.

In September 2023, Lahore-based electric mobility provider Zyp Technologies secured $1.2 million in seed funding, and unveiled its range of “made-in-Pakistan” electric bikes featuring innovative battery-swapping technology.

Pakistan’s electric scooter and bike market features a diverse range of brands, with notable names such as Vlektra, Evee, Metro, Jaguar, and Jolta leading the charge.
