‘Trash It’ startup empowers Pakistanis to dispose of their trash more efficiently

Startup ‘Trash It’ has emerged as the winner of ‘She Loves Tech’ Pakistan competition, a global competition for women, organized by CIRCLE Pakistan.

The team of Trash It started the campaign as they did not want to see Pakistan become a garbage dump.

The final round of the competition took place at the city campus of Institute of Business Administration Karachi, during the competition more than 80 initial applicants has been judged. The jury included Prof of Entrepreneurs & Innovation Imran Sayeed, OPEN Karachi President Zakiuddin Ahmed, Startup Adviser and former IBM Chief Executive Officer Humayun Bashir and Ayesha Khan, Associate Director for Portfolio at Acumen.

Team Trash It’s 4-minute pitch revolved around explaining the garbage disposal problem in Pakistan and how the garbage heaps on streets were choking the country’s growth.

Later, they proposed the ingenious idea of composting bins that can convert the organic waste from households into fertilizer, thereby reducing the amount of trash for disposal.

Speaking of the benefits of the startup, co-founder of Trash It, Anusha Fatima said, “Through the She Loves Tech initiative, CIRCLE connected me to mentors such as Raza Matin (country consultant, Google) who helped my team further advance Trash It.”

Anusha Fatima will now represent Pakistan in the global competition of She Loves Tech to be held in Beijing. Currently a student of computer science at Habib University, she is interested in civic hacking and sustainable community models.

Besides Trash It, Mera Paisa, DoctHERS, and Sehat Kahani, the other startups included SheKab, Qayyam, ELN, Kafayak, IoTA, Aurat Raj and Edvon.

The first runner up was ‘Mera Paisa’, a startup co-founded by Samar Hasan. Mera Paisa is a FinTech impact startup offering mobile wallets that facilitate low-income groups, especially women, to gain financial independence through digital payments.

‘DoctHERS’ was declared the second runner up, while the third runner-up was ‘Sehat Kahani’, which was an idea and startup of Dr Sara Saeed Khurram.
