Expats protest in Islamabad, demanding Pfizer jabs

Pakistan has only received 100,00 doses of Pfizer which can be administered to 50,000 people

Several overseas Pakistanis staged a protest in Islamabad this week outside the F-9 Park mass vaccination center, demanding that they should only be administered Pfizer vaccines.

Soon after the government announced the availability of Pfizer at F-9 Park vaccine clinic, hundreds of people reached the center demanding the Pfizer vaccine, jointly developed by German company BioNTech and US firm Pfizer.

The protestors said that overseas Pakistanis are a source of billions of dollars of remittances yet they are facing issues in Pakistan over a vaccine.

The staff, however, clarified that they could only administer the vaccine as per government instructions.

Pakistan recently received a limited quantity of 100,000 Pfizer doses via the COVAX facility which was equally distributed among all provinces and regions.

“We have only 100,000 doses of Pfizer which can be administered to only 50,000 people as each person is given two doses,” said National Health Services (NHS) spokesperson, Sajid Shah.

The government has currently restricted the Pfizer vaccine only for people with low immunity in line with the guidelines and on the recommendation of specialist doctors.
