Pakistan celebrates as athlete Arshad Nadeem wins gold at Commonwealth Games 2022

Congratulations poured in soon after Pakistani athlete Arshad Nadeem bagged the gold medal in the javelin throw competition at the Commonwealth Games 2022, becoming the first Pakistani to achieve the feat. 

Nadeem stunned thousands in attendance when he threw the javelin for a record 90.18 meters in his fifth attempt to win the gold. Two-time world champion Anderson Peters of Grenada secured second place with a mark of 88.64 meters and Kenya’s Julius Yego won bronze. 

With the win, Pakistan’s medal tally at the Commonwealth Games 2022 has increased to eight.

Arshad won Pakistan’s first Gold medal in the athletics category of the Commonwealth Games since 1962.

Nadeem’s win was incredible as he won gold without acoach and with his throwing elbow heavily taped due to injury.

“Arshad Nadeem should be one of the most celebrated people in Pakistan. He is Pakistan’s biggest shot at the Olympics too. He has achieved all of this with an injury which could get worse thanks to PSB’s planning, without his coach by his side, without support or facilities” wrote Rehan ul Haq, sports management professional and general manager of Islamabad United.

The captain of the Pakistani cricket team Babar Azam also showered praises on Nadeemm saying: “You made the nation proud.”

Former cricket star and Pakistani prime minister shared the video of the winning throw and congratulated Arshad Nadeem for winning the gold for Pakistan.
