Pakistan PM, Uzbek President holding a virtual summit tomorrow

The two leaders plan on discussing a wide range of issues including China’s Belt and Road initiative

Prime Minister Imran Khan will meet with the President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Miromonovich Mirziyoyev on 14 April 2021 through a virtual summit. The two leaders have previously on various international forums. Mutual matters of interest such as political, trade, economic, security, and connectivity, and people-to-people exchanges will be the main areas of discussion.

The Trans-Afghan Railway Project, agreed between Pakistan, Uzbekistan, and Afghanistan earlier this year, will also be discussed.  Uzbekistan, much like Pakistan, has a stake in the BRI.

The contact between the two countries have increased in the last couple of years. Earlier, PM special aide Abdul Razzaq Dawood visited Uzbekistan. The Uzbek foreign minister also visited Pakistan last month and met with both the prime minister and the foreign minister.

Pakistan and Uzbekistan have maintained friendly ties since the fall of the former USSR. Both countries also have deep-rooted interests in China Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) as it facilitates trade for them.  One hopes that the two sides can boost trade between each other and further prosper economically.
