Traditional Japanese woodblock printing meets Pakistani art at “Moku-Hanga” exhibition at National Art Gallery

The National Art Gallery hosted the inauguration of the exhibition “Moku-Hanga, prints from Pakistan” on Tuesday, an event celebrated by art enthusiasts and dignitaries alike.

Inaugurated by the Japanese Ambassador to Pakistan, Wada Mitsuhiro, the exhibition highlights a unique blend of traditional Japanese woodblock printing techniques with Pakistani artistic expression.

Organized by the Pakistan-Japan Cultural Association Islamabad (PJCA) in collaboration with Khad’o Khaal Gallery, COMSATS University, the National Testing Service-Pakistan (NTS), the Embassy of Japan, and the Pakistan National Council of the Arts, the exhibition will be open to the public until October 15.

During the opening ceremony, Ambassador Wada emphasized the significance of MOKU-HANGA, a traditional technique that has been integral to Japanese art for centuries. He stated, “This exhibition not only showcases the beauty and elegance of MOKU-HANGA but also serves as a bridge between our cultures, promoting cross-cultural understanding and appreciation.”

Jamal Shah, President of the PJCA, expressed his enthusiasm for the exhibition, stating that it beautifully reflects the diversity and richness of shared cultural experiences between Pakistan and Japan.

Curator Prof. Dr. Shahida Mansoor elaborated on the project’s innovative approach, bringing together Pakistani artists and Japanese experts to explore the centuries-old MOKU-HANGA technique. She noted that the prints are created on handmade paper using water-based, eco-friendly paints and organic materials, resulting in delicate and subtle artwork.

At the event, commendation certificates were presented by Ambassador WADA and Jamal Shah to Prof. Dr. Mansoor and participating artists in recognition of their contributions.

Following its showcase in Islamabad, the exhibition is set to travel to Peshawar, allowing more art lovers to experience this unique cultural exchange.
