A total of 93 Pakistani students from across the country have been awarded fully funded Chevening and Commonwealth scholarships for the 2024 academic year to study at top universities in the United Kingdom (UK).
This year, 46 Chevening and 47 Commonwealth scholarships have been granted, expanding a growing network of Pakistani alumni, with over 1,500 Commonwealth and nearly 2,000 Chevening graduates already engaged in leadership roles.
The scholarships cover a diverse range of disciplines, from climate studies to football science and heritage preservation, showcasing the wide range of talent within Pakistan.
Diverse cohort from across Pakistan
Students from Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Azad Kashmir, and the Federal Capital Territory make up this year’s cohort. Notably, over 60% of the Chevening scholars are women, reflecting efforts by the British High Commission to encourage applications from diverse backgrounds.
British High Commissioner to Pakistan, Jane Marriott CMG OBE, praised the initiative, saying, “The Chevening program helps develop a new generation of Pakistani leaders and changemakers. Many of our alumni have gone on to achieve extraordinary things back home. Not only do they get the benefit of studying at some of the best universities in the world, but they also get to experience the best of living in the UK.”
“From climate studies to football coaching, I am looking forward to seeing what they achieve, and encourage all those interested to apply early,” she added.
Fareeha Gull Hashmi, Assistant Manager of the Oral History Project at the Citizens Archive of Pakistan, is among the scholarship recipients. She expressed her enthusiasm, saying, “I am thrilled to be joining the University of Essex for my MA in Heritage and Museum Studies. This program is exactly what I was looking for to help me improve heritage and cultural preservation in Pakistan. I can’t wait for my journey to begin.”
For the first time, a new scholarship in Heritage and Museum Studies has been introduced, supported by Essex University. This scholarship, along with additional opportunities in climate studies and football science, highlights the UK’s commitment to supporting Pakistan’s academic and professional growth.
New Chevening Connect initiative
In addition to the scholarships, the British High Commission recently launched “Chevening Connect” in Karachi, a debate series aimed at tackling pressing global issues. The first event focused on climate change, engaging Chevening alumni and experts in discussions on how Pakistan can build climate resilience and adapt to future challenges.
The scholarships are seen as a bridge between Pakistan and the UK, not only promoting academic excellence but also fostering future leaders who will contribute to Pakistan’s development upon their return.
