Pakistan’s first Best New Artist nomination at the Grammy Awards
Arooj Aftab has become the first Pakistani singer to be nominated in the best new artist category for the Grammy Awards.
The Grammy nominated the singer’s song ‘Mohabbat’ from her album Vulture Prince, which has been a favourite since its release and made it to former US president Barack Obama’s 2021 summer playlist.
Born and raised in Lahore, she moved to the US to study at the Berklee College of Music.
Arooj Aftab started her career as an entirely self-taught female guitarist. She grew up listening to artists such as Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and American singer Jeff Buckley.
Nominees for the 64th annual Grammy Awards were announced on Tuesday night. The show is scheduled to take place in Los Angeles on Jan. 31.
Other best new artist nominees are country music singer Jimmie Allen, American singer-songwriter Olivia Rodrigo, rapper Saweetie, rapper Baby Keem, singer Finneas, British band Glass Animals, Korean-American indie rock group Japanese Breakfast, Australian breakout star The Kid Laroi, and British singer Arlo Parks.
