Sarah Inam’s family says won’t return to Canada without justice

The family of Sarah Inam, a Canadian national who was allegedly beaten to death by her husband last month, will stay in Pakistan until the completion of the court trial.

Sarah’s father, Inamur Rehman announced the decision during a news conference in Islamabad on Wednesday and called on the government and judiciary to provide them with speedy justice

The victim’s two brothers and several close relatives accompanied her father in the news conference which was facilitated and organized by the founder of a United States-based non-governmental organization (NGO) Helping Heart Caring Soul.

Addressing the media, Mr. Inam said that Sarah’s husband was a predator and extortionist who trapped his daughter for ulterior motives.

Sarah Inam, a 37-year-old economist worked in Abu Dhabi and Canada and was also associated with USAID. She remained a consultant in the finance ministry of Abu Dhabi. She had informed her family about her relationship with Shahnawaz about 8 to 10 weeks ago before getting married to him in the last week of July, shared Mr. Inam, adding that the entire family was shocked after hearing about her marriage.

After finding out that her groom is the son of Ayaz Amir, and talking with Shahnawaz on the phone several times, Mr. Inam said the family was relieved, as he seemed nice. But later he started demanding money from Sarah and the family gradually came to the conclusion that he was an extortionist.

The victim’s father was, however, unaware of how much money Shahnawaz extorted from her, as Sarah’s accounts were in Abdu Dhabi.

Shahnawaz persuaded and later murdered Sarah and it was all preplanned, alleged Mr. Inam, emphasizing that they want justice from the Pakistani judicial system

“Our counsel thinks that the case against Shahnawaz was strong because there was substantial evidence. We are satisfied with the police and the investigation over the case”, Mr. Inam added.

Sarah got married to Amir of her own choice on July 18 in his hometown of Chakwal and was later murdered with dumbbells, according to police, by her husband Shahnawaz Amir at a suburban Islamabad home on September 23
