Turkish Embassy in Islamabad celebrates Culinary Heritage during Turkish Cuisine Week 2026

The Turkish Embassy in Islamabad marked Turkish Cuisine Week 2026 with a cultural evening celebrating Türkiye’s rich culinary heritage under this year’s theme, “The Heritage Table.”

Hosted by Ambassador İrfan Neziroğlu at the Turkish Embassy Residence on May 20, the event brought together members of the media, cultural figures, food bloggers, and opinion leaders for an immersive culinary experience centered around traditional Turkish cuisine, hospitality, and shared cultural traditions.

The celebration formed part of the global Turkish Cuisine Week observances held from May 21 to May 27 under the auspices of First Lady H.E. Emine Erdoğan. Organized by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Türkiye, the annual initiative highlights Türkiye’s gastronomic traditions and their role in fostering cultural exchange and social connection.

Celebrating “The Heritage Table”

According to the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism, this year’s theme, “The Heritage Table,” aimed to present Turkish cuisine as more than a collection of dishes, emphasizing it instead as a living cultural heritage shaped over centuries through migration, rituals, traditions, and communal dining experiences.

The Islamabad event reflected that vision through a shared table experience featuring traditional dishes, Turkish coffee, and live Gözleme making.

In a social media post following the event, the Turkish Embassy stated: “At this year’s Turkish Cuisine Week celebration, our guests also joined us in making Gözleme, a traditional savory flatbread with delicious fillings for an interactive cultural experience.”

The embassy added that the evening celebrated “Türkiye’s rich culinary heritage through a shared table experience featuring traditional dishes, Turkish coffee and live Gözleme making.”

Turkish flatbread Gözleme, which was prepared live during the event, drew particular interest from guests for its resemblance to Pakistan’s popular paratha, though it is typically filled with a variety of savory ingredients, including cheese, spinach, potatoes, and minced meat.

Traditional Dishes and Cultural Storytelling

Guests were introduced to a range of iconic Turkish dishes, including mantı, tandır, dolma, baklava, and helva, each reflecting different aspects of Türkiye’s culinary identity and cultural storytelling.

The embassy said on social media that: “From Mantı to Tandır and Baklava, we highlighted the stories, traditions and hospitality at the heart of Turkish cuisine and culture,” adding that “Every dish reflects skill, craft and time.”

Speaking during the event, Ambassador Neziroğlu emphasized the cultural significance of Turkish cuisine and the longstanding ties between Türkiye and Pakistan.

“Turkish Cuisine Week is an opportunity to share the spirit of Turkish hospitality and cultural heritage with our sisters and brothers in Pakistan,” Ambassador Neziroğlu stated.

“This year, we celebrate the Turkish Cuisine Week for the 5th time across Türkiye and all over the world. The dining table or ‘sofra’ in Turkish, is the oldest language of togetherness. It also reflects the warmth of the Turkish hospitality, emphasizing the healthy, zero waste and traditional character of Turkish cuisine,” he added.

Strengthening Cultural Exchange

Turkish tourism and cultural authorities said Turkish Cuisine Week continues to promote Türkiye’s gastronomic traditions to international audiences through events hosted worldwide, including communal dining experiences, chef collaborations, traditional cooking demonstrations, and presentations of historic recipes and culinary techniques.

Officials noted that the initiative also serves as a platform for strengthening cultural exchange and deepening connections between people through food and shared traditions.
