Islamabad Traffic Police launches drive against unauthorized number plates

Islamabad Traffic Police (ITP) has kicked off an awareness campaign against all the unauthorized or improper number plates of plying vehicles on city roads. Strict action will be taken against all the vehicles having improper number plates after April 15, 2017.

The campaign has been launched on special directives of Interior minister Choudhry Nisar Ali Khan to avoid any inconvenient in smoothly traffic systems, maintain law and order in Capital and ensure protection to the citizens. The Interior Ministry issued a letter to the heads of several public sector organizations, including CPO, Chief Commissioner Islamabad, Minister of Foreign Affairs and others.

ITP has launched the campaign on the directions of the federal minister for interior, against vehicles with improper or fancy number plates which is against the legal parameters.

ITP has asked people and organizations to use proper number plates of vehicles, only issued by Excise and Taxation Office. It is further informed that after April 15, 2017, legal action will be taken against all the vehicles having improper number plates,” said the letter.

The traffic police teams have started educating federal motorists and motorcyclists to remove the unauthorized number plates and display only legal number plates allotted from Excise and Taxation department.

The campaign will continue till 15 April, while all those special fancy or VIP number plates will be considered fake and fine would be imposed after the given deadline for the awareness campaign.

It has been noticed that a large number of vehicle affiliated with administrative officials including many member parliaments are involved in using improper number plates on their vehicles. The offices and the departments included the Prime Minster House, National Assembly, Senate Secretariat, Ministries of interior, foreign affairs and finance, the Cabinet Division, Election Commission of Pakistan and the CDA.

Besides, the central police office, the chief commissioner office, office of the SSP Diplomatic Enclave, the excise and taxation office (ETO), Chamber of Commerce and Industry and others are also using such number plates.

SSP Traffic, Malik Matloob Ahmad said: “It has been observed that people working in your organization in the capital city are driving their vehicles with improper and fancy number plates which is against the legal parameters.”

He urged the motorists to display the number plates on their vehicles as prescribed in Motor Vehicle Ordinance and also keep with them their driving licenses and vehicles documents showing possession on their names or even authority letters.

The SSP has requested the respective heads that all the concerned, working under their direct command may be directed to use proper number plates for the vehicles.
