First direct shipping route between Pakistan and Bangladesh boosts trade and connectivity in South Asia

Pakistan’s National Logistics Corporation (NLC) and Emirati multinational logistics company DP World has successfully shipped over 1,000 containers between Pakistan and Bangladesh since launching the first direct shipping route between the two countries in October 2024.

The new maritime link has led to a more than 50% reduction in transit times between Karachi, Pakistan, and Chittagong, Bangladesh, according to DP World’s latest statement. By eliminating the need for transshipment, the route offers greater efficiency and improved logistics, helping to streamline the movement of goods and strengthen trade relations between the two nations.

Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Group Chairman and Chief Executive of DP World, commented on the new service, stating, “We are committed to enhancing regional connectivity and facilitating trade growth. This new service line is a testament to our dedication to providing innovative logistics solutions that meet the evolving needs of our customers. This new route, also connects to many of our regional and global routes, giving businesses and traders connectivity to all parts of our global network, enhancing their opportunities to build their business, and service new customers.”

The service is part of a broader network connecting six key ports across South and Southeast Asia, including Port Klang (Malaysia), Jebel Ali (UAE), Karachi (Pakistan), Chittagong (Bangladesh), Belawan (Indonesia), and Mundra (India). The new direct route offers a quicker and more reliable logistics option for goods traveling between Karachi and Chittagong, with an 11-day transit time.

The maiden voyage of the direct route, which took place on October 30, carried 304 containers directly from Karachi to Chittagong. The service has grown rapidly, with the second shipment seeing more than double the container load.

The latest shipment, onboard the Yuan Xiang Fa Zhan, departed Karachi and is expected to reach Chittagong Port on January 11, 2025, carrying industrial raw materials, agricultural products, and textile fabrics.

DP World and NLC’s joint venture is set to continue enhancing trade relations between Pakistan and Bangladesh, contributing to the region’s economic growth and improved supply chain connectivity.
