Traffic plan issued for Muharram processions in Islamabad and Rawalpindi

The city administration, law enforcement, and security agencies in the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi have has taken appropriate measures to keep the city safe on Muharram 9 and 10.

Total 79 processions will be appear on 9th in which 6 processions have been placed in category A, 18 processions in category B and 55 processions in category C while in total there will be total 206 gatherings (Majalis) in which 24 in category A, 36 in category B and 146 gatherings in category C.

Islamabad police has decided to deploy more than 520 policemen on the various routes of processions to avoid any inconvenience to the road users. In Pindi, over 5,000 policemen will guard 79 mourning processions and 206 congregations.

Cellular networks will work

Unlike previous years, mobile phone service will not be suspended in the capital to maintain security around the main mourning procession.

“Mobile phone service will not be suspended this year. Instead, we have increased security cordons around processions from three to five to ensure security,” said SSP Kiani.

Traffic plan issued for Ashura processions

Islamabad Traffic Police (ITP) has devised a special traffic plan for Muharram 9.

According to the plan:

  • 7th Avenue from F-6 Chowk to Soharwardi road will be closed for general traffic.
  • Fazal e Haq Road from China Chowk to Kalsum Plaza will be closed
  • The road from Iqbal Hall to Melody Chowk, Municipal Road from Markazi Jamia Masjid to Polyclinic Chowk, Luqman e Hakeem Road from Polyclinic to Lal Quarter will be closed.
  • The traffic on G-6 service road from G-6/2 Chowk to Lal Quarter Chowk will be diverted alternate routes.
  • Various roads including I-10 Markaz, CDA Chowk no. 1, Katarian bridge, IJP Road (Pirwdhai and Faizabad area) will remain closed.
  • Citizens can use the IJP road if they want to go to I-10 (Sabzi Mandi) from Faizabad, Murree road, Bhara Kah or Khana bridge.
  • The residents of sectors I-8, I-9 would use external IJP, Pirwadhai road. The citizens have been requested to cooperate with ITP and call 1915 or 0519261992 to get further information.
