Choudry Zaheer Jan of Islamabad who has been selling homemade macaroni for more than a month had never imagined a single tweet would change his life and bring in crowds of customers.
Jan, who sells homemade macaroni at Islamabad’s G-9 Markaz, was overwhelmed by a viral Twitter response as his complete stock was sold out in just a couple of hours.
“I am thankful to the people who uploaded my picture and stories. I have been receiving a really good response,” Jan told the media.
Jan, along with his younger brother Adnan carry a total of 18 to 20 single-serving boxes of macaroni, Rs100 each, every day in their red Suzuki Mehran to a fixed spot across Bata Store in G-9 Markaz, Islamabad where he waits for the customers from 5 pm to 10 pm with three boxes on the roof of the car. To grab peoples’ attention he has put fairy lights on the car’s rear windscreen along with a poster which reads ‘Home Made Macaroni Rs:100/-”
A day after a Twitter user uploaded Jan’s pictures and story on Twitter, he was surprised to find customers already waiting for him as he reached his usual spot. His boxes were sold out in just two hours and he left early that day. Many customers even messaged him and asked about his whereabouts.
Jan told the media that he is completing his Intermediate privately and started this small venture to help his father financially.
“My father makes Rs25000 per month and, sometimes, it’s not enough as we are a family of six”, he elaborated.
Mother and younger sister of Jan are his biggest source of help as they are the ones who cook the yummilicious macaroni every day.
“Most places sell burgers, fries, rice, and chicken dishes, and I wanted to offer a different dish and it helped that my sister and mother make really good macaroni,” he smiled.
When discussing the affordable price of the Macaroni, he reasoned that “People have told me that I am selling my product for too little but I want everyone to be able to taste our dish.”
He plans on expanding the business and including other dishes such as spaghetti. Some food app representatives have gotten in touch with him too and negotiations are underway.
