Islamabad’s first reverse vending machine unveiled

The machine will collect plastic bottles in a bid to increase recycling

Islamabad got its first reverse vending machine (RVM) which allows people to deposit plastic bottles.  Prime Minister’s Special Assistant on Climate Change Malik Amin Aslam unveiled the machine that is installed in Jinnah Super Market in Sector F-7.

Aslam said that the machine will encourage the masses to deposit their plastic bottles. “All of us will have to work together to truly address the plastic issue. The RVM machine is a way of making that connection with the public and encouraging them to recycle,” he said.

The machine is installed by Pepsico which vowed to help collect garbage under the Prime Minister’s Green initiative. The company also announced that it plans to up the collection of plastic waste from over 4,700 tons a year to over 10,000 tons.

Such vending machines are present in most countries of the world. They usually offer cash or other kinds of incentives to the depositors in order to keep them interested in doing so in the longer run.
