New IG Police appointed in Islamabad to improve law and order situation

The outgoing IGP served for over two years, the third-longest tenure since the inception of the capital police department

The federal government appointed Qazi Jamilur Rehman as the new Inspector General for the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT), replacing Muhammad Aamir Zulfiqar Khan. The move is seen as a result of the recent killing of the 21-year-old in Islamabad at the hands of police’s counter terrorism department. Rehman is expected to assume the charge today.

“Muhammad Aamir Zulfiqar Khan, an Officer of BS-21 of Police Service of Pakistan, presently posted as Inspector General, Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) Police, under the Interior Division, is transferred and directed to report to the Establishment Division with immediate effect and until further orders,” the notification read.

Khan’s tenure lasted for over two years and two months, the third-longest since the inception of the capital police in 1981. He has appointed the position in November 2018. He had also served as IGP National Highways and Motorway Police previously.

Rehman’s previous attachment was as head the Special [Surveillance] Branch of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) police. He previously served in the capacity of the regional police officer in some KP districts as well.

The new IG Islamabad is one grade junior to his predecessor, as per the written notification. “Qazi Jamilur Rehman, a BS-20 officer of Police Service of Pakistan, presently serving under Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, is transferred and posted as Inspector General, Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) Police, under Interior Division, in his pay and scale, with immediate effect and until further orders,” the notification read.

Citizens hope that the new IG will be able to develop plans that will fully curb the crime in the federal capital. While the overall crime went down in Islamabad in 2020, daylight thefts in recent weeks in significant markets have shocked everyone.
