Pakistani climbers have begun the Mount Everest summer climbing season 2023 with new tales of triumph.
On May 14th, the young Pakistani mountaineer Sajid Sadpara scaled the world’s highest peak in ‘Alpine style’ without supplemental oxygen or support from high-altitude porters.
The son of legendary Mohammad Ali Sadpara, who became the first Pakistani to summit the 8,848-metre-tall peak, without supplemental oxygen and other support, described this achievement as his late father’s lifelong dream.
“History has been made as 1st Pakistani to be on the top of Everest solo without the use of supplemental oxygen & personal sherpa assistance” reads the caption on his Instagram post.

Karar Haidri, general secretary of the Alpine Club of Pakistan, said: “Sajid summited Mount Everest on Sunday without O2 and the support of sherpa. Now on his way down to C4. What an incredible achievement for Pakistan.”
Sadpara’s goal is to ascend all 14 peaks that stand above 8,000 meters in Alpine style – a technique in which mountaineers manage everything from carrying food, tent, ropes, and setting routes themselves. In the words of alpine-style guru Mick Fowler, it is “all about mountaineering in a self-sufficient manner, carrying all one’s food, shelter and equipment and leaving no trace of one’s passing.”
He has already summited K2 (8,611m), Gasherbrum-I (8,080m), and Gasherbrum-II (8,035m) in Pakistan, as well as Manaslu (8,163m) in Nepal, without supplemental oxygen.
Pakistani climbers are leading Everest’s 2023 summer summit wave order. The first foreign climber to summit Everest this year is a woman from Pakistan – Naila Kiani. A British Pakistani woman, Nadia Azad, also summited the world’s highest peak.
