Pakistan’s president dissolves National Assembly after opposition’s no-trust vote rejected

Pakistan’s president dissolved the National Assembly on the advice of Prime Minister Imran Khan

President Dr Arif Alvi on Sunday dissolved the National Assembly on Prime Minister Imran Khan’s advice after the joint opposition’s no-confidence motion was declared unconstitutional by the deputy speaker.

“The president of Pakistan, Dr Arif Alvi, has approved the advice of the prime minister of Pakistan to dissolve the National Assembly under Article 58 (1) read with Article 48(1) of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan,” according to a statement issued by the President’s Secretariat.

Former Interior Minister Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed had earlier advised that the provincial assemblies of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) could also be dissolved along with the National Assembly.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court of Pakistan has taken notice of the ongoing situation in the country to deliberate on the current political and constitutional crisis after the opposition’s no-confidence motion was rejected.
