Subsidy will be provided to 30 million families in the country from June onward to allow masses greater purchasing power
Prime Minister Imran Khan launched a drive to ensure that people across Pakistan receive funds to ensure they can put food on their tables. 30 million families will receive subsidies, deposited directly into their accounts, for the purpose of acquiring food from June onwards in order to counter the rising inflation.
The program, which is called ‘Koi Bhuka Na Soye’, will run under the banner of the Ehsaas Program. Laborers in Islamabad and Rawalpindi will receive meal boxes twice a day without any cost through mobile kitchens.
Imran Khan was present at one of these food trucks and distributed food to the needy. He also checked the quality of the food being served. Speaking at the occasion, the prime minister said that a similar program for the farmers to get fertilizers and other farm products on subsidy will also be introduced soon. He was pleased with the fact that the free meal program will help the laborers fulfill the needs of their families. He vowed that the program will be extended to the entire country.
A good step but
The initiative by the Prime Minister is excellent and it will provide most poor families in the country with some relief. Such steps will certainly provide breathing space financially and even improve their standard of living to some degree.
However, the effects of such initiatives cannot outrun the rampant, nearly double-digit inflation. Controlling the prices of edibles and necessities of life should a top priority. At the same time, the government needs to create an environment that supports business development in the country. The more people that will be employed, fewer will need government handouts and the health of the economy will improve permanently. One hopes that the government is working on both sides to improve the quality of life of the common man.
