Prime Minister Imran Khan urges Pakistanis to wear masks to avoid COVID

Scientists are not completely sure about the effects of weather change on the novel coronavirus

Imran Khan has reminded the people that wearing masks is still essential as the threat of coronavirus still looms over. It is an important thing to remember with schools opening nationwide and many businesses also returning to their normal hours.

“Compared to some other states, Allah has been kind to us in Pakistan and spared us worst effects of Covid-19,” he tweeted. “All offices and educational institutions must ensure masks are worn.”

Colder weather suits COVID

The novel coronavirus can survive and even thrive in colder weather, it was reported. Temperature of 4 degrees Celsius may even be ideal for CVOD-19. “The UK’s Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies says a temperature of 4C is a particular sweet spot for coronavirus. There is also less UV light, which inactivates the virus, from the sun in winter too,” media reports noted.

Flu season is coming

Flu is quite common in different parts of the world as colder weather is coming. However, it is not clear whether the vaccines for something like Influenza will have an impact on the coronavirus. The experts are emphasizing that people should wear masks, maintain social distancing and avoid overly crowded places.

Seasonal variations unknown

Scientists still are unsure about the seasonal variation of the coronavirus since there isn’t enough data. Micaela Martinez, an infectious disease ecologist at Columbia University in New York City, said that more information is needed before the variability of the virus based on the weather can be understood.

“We have yet to experience a whole cycle and one full year of transmission in any location, so we’re unable to actually measure what the relationship is between transmission and things like temperature and humidity,” she said.

It is crucial that the threat of COVID-19 is taken seriously and precautions are maintained until a proper vaccine is developed. It will remain like this in foreseeable future and vigilance remains the key.
