Punjab approves 300 hybrid buses, underground train system for Lahore

The Punjab cabinet on Friday accorded the approval to complete the underground Mass-Transit system for Lahore which would also incorporate underground purple-line and blue-line transportation project in the Annual Development Programme (ADP).

While presiding the 6th provincial cabinet meeting at CM Office, Chief Minister Punjab Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi stated that the Blue-line, Purple-line and Mass-Transit project will be launched with the cooperation of Asian Development Bank and that this project will be built on BOT basis and not a single penny of Punjab government will be spent on it. 

Underground Mass transit system will be built from Valencia to Kalma Chowk, Liberty Chowk, Data Darbar up to Airport. Eight big stations of the Orange Line will also be developed.

Approval of Hybrid buses

Masstransit Authority would run hybrid buses in Lahore with the cooperation of private operators.

“Purchase of 300 hybrid buses has been approved in first phase, for which as many as 200 new bus stops would be set up in Lahore to facilitate commuters. Overall 513 hybrid buses would be operated in Lahore,” Punjab Chief Minister Ch Pervaiz Elahi informed while presiding over the meeting of Masstransit Authority here on Sunday.

The CM gave following directions to authorities regarding the operationalization of hybrid buses:

  • To allot seats for women, blind and differently abled persons in the buses
  • To facilitate differently abled persons in a proper manner, seats should be near to the doors of the buses.
  •  To set up new bus stops in the city 
  • Routes of the new buses should be determined keeping in view the timings of students of the educational institutions.

Construction of offices of Masstransit Authority in Dera Gujran was also approved by the CM along with the approval of auction policy of the authority.

Transport secretary and other officials also attended the meeting.
