Samina Baig becomes first Pakistani woman to summit K2, Naila Kiani followed her

Two Pakistani female mountaineers created history on Friday morning with a successful K2 summit in which renowned Pakistani mountaineer Samina Baig became the first Pakistani woman to scale K2 while Naila Kiani, a Dubai-based Pakistani mountaineer followed Samina, becoming the second.

Samina Baig, who comes from a remote village of Gilgit valley Shimshal, along with other Pakistani mountaineers, summited K2 at 7:42 am PST on Friday, her team confirmed.

“We are extremely proud to announce that Samina Baig with her strong Pakistani team, successfully summitted the world’s most fascinating and dangerous mountain known as the savage mountain — the world’s second and Pakistan’s tallest mountain K2 8,611meters this morning at 7:42 am,” read a statement by Samina’s team at the ground.

“Grateful and blessed that K2 allowed her to stand atop this incredible mountain,” the statement added.

After her successful summit of K2, Samina has now become the only Pakistani woman to have conquered both Mount Everest (the highest peak) and K2 (the second highest mountain) in the world. Additionally, she holds the record of climbing the seven highest peaks in the world, known as the Seven Summits.

The mountaineers who scaled K2 with Samina on Friday included Eid Muhammad, Bulbul Karim, Ahmed Baig, Rizwan Dad, Waqar Ali and Akber Hussain Sadpara.

Naila Kiani summits K2

Nearly three hours after Samina’s feat, Pakistan’s Naila Kiani reached the top.

“Yes, Allhamdolillah,” Naila texted this correspondent via a satellite communication device, confirming her summit along with her team members, Sohail Sakhi and Sirbaz Ali Khan.

The summit push started late at night on Thursday as soon as rope fixing teams completed their jobs and the first group reached atop K2 at around 3 am in night.

Foeign Female Climbers summit the Savage Peak

Numerous other mountaineers from various countries, including female climbers from Oman, Iran, Taiwan and Lebanon climbed the K2 on Friday morning. Female mountaineers who scaled K2 on Friday in addition to the Pakistani teams include:

Afsane Hesamifard and Nadhira Alharthy

Afsane Hesamifard from Iran and Nadhira Alharthy of Oman became the first ever female mountaineers from their respective countries to summit the K2. They were part of the Seven Summits Treks team and reached the top just a few hours after the rope fixing.

One Nepali mountaineer Pasdawa Sherpa has become the fastest person to summit the five highest mountains on Earth. He broke Nirmal Purja Magar’s record by climbing the five mountains in 69 days.


Nelly Attar

Nelly Attar, an Arab Lebanese woman, was part of another group that successfully summited k2 on Friday Morning. Her team members included Estonia’s Krisli Melesk , America’s Terray Ellington Sylvester, and Argentina’s Claudio Cocho Javier.

Nelly’s team was further accompanied by Pakistan’s Inayat Ali as well as Nepali Aang Phurba Sherpa, Dorji Gyljen Sherpa, Siddhi Bahadur Tamang, Kamdorji Sherpa, Mingdongji Sherpa, Lakhpa Wongchu Sherpa, Lakpa Sherpa, Lakpa Bhote, Temba Sherpa and Rinji Sherpa all of whom were part of Madison Mountaineering.


Grace Tseng

Taiwan’s 29-year-old Grace Tseng successfully climbed Mt K2 without supplementary oxygen at 07:35 PKT this morning. Grace is now the first and only Taiwanese on the summit of the second-highest mountain in the world.

She was accompanied by Nepali climbers Nima Gyalzen Sherpa and Ningma Dorje Tamang.


Pakistani Climber’s historic summit of G2

A Pakistani climber Mr. Ahmed Hussain scaled the G2 peak in 14 hours from the base camp. He made history for the Pakistanis.
