55,000 vulnerable people will be provided with shelter, clean water, and sanitation
The UK will be assisting Pakistan to overcome the devastating floods caused by the record monsoon rains received by the country this year. The package is worth £800,000 and will be given through the National Disaster Consortium (NDC). The worst hit areas of Sindh by the record flooding will receive the initial aid. The help will include clean water, sanitation and shelter to over 55,000 vulnerable people in Pakistan.
Lord (Tariq) Ahmad, Minister of State for South Asia at the UK’s Foreign Commonwealth & Development Office, made the announcement during a virtual visit to Pakistan. During the visit, he discussed how the two countries can work together on climate change with the officials of the Pakistani government.
Lord Ahmed expressed his sadness over the devastation caused by the flooding and the loss of lives. He said that UK stands with Pakistan in this difficult period.
“Like everyone in the UK, I have been saddened to see the heart-breaking images of the flooding in Pakistan. The UK stands with Pakistan, ready to help, as entire communities have lost their homes, livelihoods and loved ones,” Ahmad said.
During my first virtual visit to Pakistan as a Minister of the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, I also launched a year of climate action from the British High Commission ahead of COP26, which will save lives, create jobs and protect the environment,” he added.
British High Commissioner Christian Turner CMG also said that following Pakistan’s remarkable success against Covid-19, it is important that we support strengthening systems against the devastating flooding.
Pakistan was badly hit by flooding due to unusually high levels of rain during the monsoon season. Some areas of Sindh received the most rain in 90 years. The flooding led to devastation, both in rural and urban areas.
