ISLAMABAD – American Ambassador to Pakistan David Hale and members of the United States Marines Corps donated nearly 500 items to children from the SOS Children’s Village in Islamabad at a ceremony at the American Embassy in Islamabad on Saturday.

More than 50 children from the shelter joined Ambassador Hale and the Marines for the event. American and Pakistani employees of the embassy donated to the program over the past two months, giving gifts ranging from toys to shoes and clothing.  The Marines collected donations under the international campaign, Toys For Tots.

SOS Children’s Village Islamabad is a home and school for nearly 100 orphaned children from Islamabad.  The village is part of a network of facilities spanning across 12 districts in Pakistan.

The idea of the Children’s Village is to offer children, who are deprived of their parents, in an environment which is as close as possible to home. The organisation is working towards the goal of being able to provide shelter to every deserving child in the country. But this is a realistic target as the organisation admits only those children who are either complete orphans or, categorised as social orphans, whose mother being remarried or having an incurable disease or mental illness and, as a consequence, being unable to provide for the children.
