1900 CCTV cameras installed in Islamabad under Safe City Project

A total of 2100 CCTV cameras would be installed in Islamabad to improve security in the city

Around 1900 CCTV cameras have been installed at different points in Islamabad to enhance the security of the federal capital under safe city project.

The information was shared by Minister of State for Interior Muhammad Balighur Rehman during the Senate question-hour session. In response to a question by opposition member from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Senator Nauman Wazir Khattak, State Minister for Interior Balighur Rehman said that Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) administration has confirmed that the CCTV cameras do not have the software to identify faces.

However, he quickly said that approval for the fresh cameras has been accorded for installation of the software without any further delay.

Senator Nauman Khattak also questioned that he was also informed about the cameras are of poor quality of two Mega-pixels and could not even identify number plate of a vehicle.

In reply to Khattak, Balighur Rehman explained that these security cameras are assisting to identify the criminals and check crimes. He added that smart recognition software for vehicles number-plates would soon be functional along with these cameras.

He said that another 200 cameras would be installed soon, while the traders and shopping malls are being encouraged to install such cameras.

He agreed to a proposal that the Centre might consider legislation to also call on the provinces to opt for CCTV cameras in due course of time. “The installation of these cameras has helped making Islamabad one of the safest cities,” the minister went on to claim.

Muhammad Balighur Rehman told the House during question hour that a total of 2,100 CCTV cameras would be installed in Islamabad, out of which 1900 CCTV cameras have been installed at different points in Islamabad.

He pointed out that these cameras are helping to identify the criminals and stop crimes. He said private shopping malls and business centres are also being encouraged to install these cameras.

The minister for Interior further stated that keeping current security situation that Punjab Government is also going to implement Safe City project in six cities in the province.

Balighur Rehman claimed that the utility of the cameras is well-established and they have helped improve not only the law and order in Islamabad, but crime has also come down significantly and traffic was also being managed in a better way.
