8 Pakistani Nurses and Midwives named among the top 100 in the world

All eight medical professionals belong to faculty and alumni at Aga Khan University’s School of Nursing and Midwifery

Pakistan’s medical professionals continue to earn name for the country as eight made it to the 2020 global list of ‘100 Outstanding Women Nurse and Midwife Leaders’ for their contributions to raising healthcare standards across the globe, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic. The nurses and midwives recognized belong to the faculty and alumni at Aga Khan University’s School of Nursing and Midwifery (Sonam).

The nurses and midwives were selected from 43 countries and marked an end to the World Health Organization’s (WHO) yearlong ‘Year of the Nurse and the Midwife 2020’ campaign. The outstanding leaders were acknowledged by Women in Global Health (WGH), in collaboration with the WHO, United Nations Population Fund, Nursing Now, International Council of Nurses and International Confederation of Midwives.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs appreciated the role of Pakistani nurses and efforts and highlighted their excellent work which brought a good name for the country.

Sonam Dean Dr. Rozina Karmaliani was honored under the Board and Management category in recognition of her efforts to spearhead improvements in adolescent health, strengthen research capacities and integrate research into education and practice. Karmaliani said there wasn’t a better time than now to appreciate the nurses and midwives as they are performing critical roles amid COVID-19.

“It is an honor to be acknowledged by the international public health and nursing fraternity,” Karmaliani said. “There is no better time than now to acknowledge the critical role of nurses in creating resilient healthcare systems.”

Better training facilities needed

Medical professionals have always brought a good name to Pakistan and it is high time that they are appreciated for their efforts. It is also essential that we up the quality of education and training to further help them better serve humanity. Agha Khan University and Hospital have maintained international standards for years and the results can be seen in shape of these awards.
