The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has launched a series of significant development projects, including upgrading the Islamabad Expressway, construction of crucial interchanges, and a comprehensive city-wide beautification drive, aimed at transforming Islamabad’s urban landscape and easing traffic flow.
Expansion of the Islamabad Expressway, one of the city’s busiest and most vital roadways, is the central element of the development. The project will see the addition of extra lanes, the construction of service roads, and the enhancement of key intersections. These improvements are expected to reduce congestion, streamline traffic flow, and cut down on travel time for commuters.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif laid the foundation stones for the Serena Chowk on Khayaban-i-Suharwardi and PTCL Chowk on 9th Avenue, aimed at improving traffic flow in Islamabad. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and CDA Chairman Mohammad Ali Randhawa briefed the PM that the Serena Chowk project will be completed in 60 days, while the 9th Avenue project will be finished in 100 days.
New Interchanges in Islamabad
“Islamabad Expressway is a vital link for the capital’s residents, and the upgrade will significantly alleviate congestion,” a spokesperson for the CDA highlighted. “We want to ensure a hassle-free commute for everyone, whether they’re heading to work or visiting the city.”
Alongside the expressway project, the CDA is constructing new interchanges at key high-traffic locations, including F-8 Exchange, PTCL Chowk Interchange, and Serena Chowk Interchange. These interchanges aim to eliminate traffic bottlenecks and facilitate smoother and more efficient movement throughout these busy areas.
“These new interchanges will completely transform traffic management in these areas,” the spokesperson said.
To ensure the functionality and aesthetic value of these projects, the CDA is using advanced 3D modeling techniques. “We’re using advanced 3D modeling to ensure these designs meet both functional and aesthetic standards, contributing to a smarter, more accessible city,” the spokesperson explained.
Project cost
The cost of the two major infrastructure projects launched by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in Islamabad is significant.
Serena Chowk project, valued at Rs 4.2 billion, is expected to be completed within 60 days and will include the construction of some loops and three underpasses (two on Srinagar Highway and one on Khyaban-i-Suharwardi).
While the Serena project was initially planned to begin last year at Rs 2.1 billion, its scope was expanded, leading to an increase in budget. The additional work has significantly raised the overall cost, which is now nearly double the original estimate.
Meanwhile, the PTCL Chowk on 9th Avenue, costing Rs 4.1 billion, will feature a flyover and is slated for completion in 100 days. These projects are part of a broader push to enhance Islamabad’s infrastructure and traffic flow, with both expected to alleviate congestion and improve connectivity in the capital city.
Green urban spaces
In addition to the infrastructural upgrades, the CDA has also launched a beautification campaign designed to enhance Islamabad’s green spaces and public areas. This initiative includes landscaping, installation of street art, and the addition of greenery along main roads and in public spaces, all aimed at improving the city’s visual appeal.
“Islamabad is known for its natural beauty, and the CDA is committed to preserving and enhancing this,” remarked the spokesperson. “Through our beautification projects, we’re aiming to create spaces that residents can take pride in, while also attracting visitors to experience our beautiful city.”
These development projects are part of a broader strategy to modernize Islamabad while preserving its reputation as one of the world’s most livable cities. The public can track the progress of these initiatives through social media under the hashtags #CDAcares and #HumCDA, where updates and further details will be shared.
