German doctor fighting leprosy in Pakstan receives highest award

“German sister” Dr. Chris Schmotzer serving at Pakistan’s Leprosy Hospital Rawalpindi awarded the German Order of Merit

Dr. Chris Schmotzer, a German physician and director of the Leprosy Hospital in Rawalpindi, awarded the German Order of Merit award for her tireless services to humanity.

On behalf of the German Federal President, German Ambassador to Pakistan Bernhard Schlagheck awarded the Order of Merit to Dr. Schmotzer at a ceremony held at the German Embassy Islamabad. The honour is the highest tribute the Federal Republic of Germany can pay to individuals for outstanding services.

“Dr. Chris Schmotzer is a role model of true philanthropy! As a token of appreciation of the German Federal President for her tireless work, I gladly hand over the Cross of Merit to Dr. Chris Schmotzer” the ambassador said.

“Thirty-three years ago, as a young woman, she decided to devote her life to the service of humanity. In Rawalpindi and beyond, she is widely known and respected as a compassionate and devoted medical doctor who always gives priority to the treatment of sick and needy people” the ambassador shared.

Special Assistant to Prime Minister (SAPM) on Health, Dr. Faisal Sultan, also attended the ceremony and praised the work of Dr. Schmotzer and her team and their contribution to Pakistanis for over three decades.

Dr. Chris Schmotzer – guardian angel for Pakistan’s leprosy patients

As director of the Rawalpindi Leprosy Hospital, Dr. Chris Schmotzer has been serving the Pakistani people for 33 years now, offering treatment to patients with leprosy, tuberculosis, eye and skin diseases as well as rehabilitation measures.

She is known in Pakistan simply as the “German sister” due to her association with the German Protestant Sisterhood of Christ-Bearers, according to the official statement by the embassy.

The German doctor decided to come to Pakistan shortly after finishing her medicine studies in 1988. Since then, she has contributed to fighting leprosy and tuberculosis in Pakistan. She also closely worked with Dr. Ruth Pfau remembered as “Mother Teresa of Pakistan” for her crucial role in containing leprosy in the country.
