Islamabad to get its first drive-in cinema

The cinema will be open for three days a week and will follow social distancing protocols

The Capital Development Authority (CDA) is partnering with the Active Marketing Agency and telco giant Jazz to launch a drive-in cinema in Islamabad from December 18, 2020, at the parade ground. The cinema will operate three days a week from Friday to Sunday and SOPs for social distancing will be followed. The move is taken to provide the common folks with some family entertainment with the closure of the traditional cinemas due to COVID-19.

The project, which was announced yesterday, will be a pilot for similar cinemas across the country. Jazz is also trying to promote e-payments and will refund half of the ticket price initially. The cinemas will screen movies from 5.30 in the evening.

A good idea

The open-air drive-in cinemas are nothing new and are present in many parts of the world. However, in Pakistan, the concept is relatively new as the focus has always been on the traditional cinemas. People will be able to enjoy time with their families, maintaining social distancing ad getting good quality entertainment. Such a break from the COVID stress is very welcome.
