The Italian Navy’s Carrier Strike Group, featuring the aircraft carrier ITS CAVOUR and frigate ITS ALPINO, arrived in Karachi as part of a three-day visit aimed at strengthening bilateral ties and enhancing maritime cooperation between Pakistan and Italy.
Upon their arrival, the Italian vessels were greeted by high-ranking officials from the Pakistan Navy and Italy’s Ambassador to Pakistan, Marilina Armellin. This visit marks a notable step in fostering collaboration between the two nations.
A meeting followed the arrival, where Ambassador Armellin and Rear Admiral Stefano Barbieri, Capability Director of the Italian Defence General Staff, engaged with Rear Admiral Abdul Munib, Commander of the Pakistan Fleet. The discussions focused on enhancing interoperability and exploring future avenues for collaboration in regional maritime security and defense.
Vice Admiral Muhammad Faisal Abbasi, Commander Karachi, also visited ITS CAVOUR, receiving a detailed briefing on the aircraft carrier’s advanced capabilities from Commanding Officer Captain Francesco Fagnani.

In addition to diplomatic meetings, a Defence Industries Exhibition was held onboard ITS ALPINO, showcasing the strengths of Italian defense industries. The exhibition highlighted the technological advancements and strategic importance of Italy’s naval capabilities.
The visit also included a media briefing on ITS CAVOUR, where key officials reiterated the importance of cooperation in maritime security. “The Pakistan Navy plays a pivotal role in ensuring regional stability, and our collaboration will enhance our mutual security interests,” stated Ambassador Armellin.
The presence of the Italian Navy in Karachi underscores the growing ties between Italy and Pakistan, particularly in the defense sector, and sets the stage for future joint exercises aimed at bolstering maritime security in the region.
