Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to arrive in Pakistan on Oct 2 to boost trade and connectivity

Malaysian Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim will visit Pakistan from October 2-4, following an invitation from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Pakistan Foreign Office confirmed on September 30.

The visit, which marks the first by a Malaysian premier in five years, is expected to deepen cooperation across various sectors. Anwar will be accompanied by a high-level delegation, including ministers, deputy ministers, and senior officials.

Pakistan and Malaysia to expand cooperation across sectors

During the visit, Prime Minister Anwar will hold discussions with Prime Minister Sharif on a broad agenda aimed at strengthening ties between Pakistan and Malaysia. Key areas of focus will include trade, connectivity, energy, agriculture, the halal industry, tourism, and cultural exchanges. Both leaders will also discuss regional and global developments of mutual interest.

According to the Foreign Office, the two prime ministers will oversee the signing of two significant agreements: a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE) and the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan, and a Letter of Cooperation between the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA).

Cultural Diplomacy and Academic Engagement

A special highlight of the visit will be the launch of three translated works of Allama Muhammad Iqbal, Pakistan’s renowned poet, translated into Bahasa Melayu from Persian, Urdu, and English. Additionally, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar is set to deliver a lecture at the National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST), where he will receive an honorary doctorate in philosophy.

Strengthening long-standing Relations

Pakistan and Malaysia share a long history of strong bilateral relations, deeply rooted in common cultural, religious, and historical ties. Last month, Malaysia’s Deputy Head of Mission, Syafik Firdaus Hasbullah, highlighted the potential for enhanced collaboration in defense, security, science and technology, and renewable energy. The upcoming visit is expected to build on this foundation, broadening cooperation across these critical sectors.
