NUST launches new degree program at SCME

“Process System Engineering (PSE)” has been offered by few of world’s leading universities

Department of Chemical Engineering, NUST is now offering undergraduate and postgraduate programs in Chemical Engineering and Energetic Materials Engineering since its inception in 2006.

In order to complement the requirement of engineers with a background in Process Systems Engineering (PSE), School of Chemical and Materials Engineering (SCME) is planning to start a new program “MS in Process Systems Engineering (PSE)” from Fall 2018.

Process Systems Engineering is approved by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) and is the first MS degree program in PSE being offered by any university in Pakistan. PSE is a largely mature and well-established discipline of chemical engineering. PSE has evolved into a specialized field at the interface between chemical engineering, applied mathematics science. It deals with the inherent complexity of chemical processes and the multi-objective nature of decision-making during the lifecycle of the manufacturing process of chemical products.

Process Systems Engineering is a relatively young area in chemical engineering. The first time that this term was used was in a Special Volume of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AlCh E) Symposium Series in 1961. However, it was not until 1982 when the first international symposium on this topic took place in Kyoto, Japan, that the term PSE started to become widely accepted.

Objectives of the program

This curriculum is designed to:

  • Strengthen the students’ knowledge in process design, optimization and control, and its application in sustainable industrial operations.
  • Enhance technical knowledge to address contemporary problems in an industrial setting.
  • Encourage a state of the art research and ability to work in multidisciplinary teams.

Eligibility Criteria

Students having BE (16 years education) degree in the following disciplines are eligible: Chemical Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Polymers Engineering or Materials Engineering.

Research Domain

The SCME PSE group aims to focus on the following three areas of research:

  • Intelligent monitoring, control and optimization of chemical plants.
  • Intelligent planning and scheduling the operational procedure of industrial units.
  • Molecular level design of chemical processes to identify optimized operational parameters for lab-scale experiments, and achieve desired physical and chemical properties for their industrial applications.

World-Wide PSE-based Established Research Groups

PSE is now an active area of teaching and research in many countries, particularly in the US, UK, European countries, Japan, Korea, China and Malaysia. Since 1992 Europe hosts the annual ESCAPE meeting (European Symposium of Computer Aided Process Engineering). Another series of conferences sponsored by AlChE and other partners on the subject of PSE is held every three years rotating between Asia, Europe, North and South America.
