Pak-Spain relations strengthened over years in form of trade, high-level exchanges: Qureshi

Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi said on Thursday that the bilateral ties between Pakistan and Spain strengthened and deepened over the past seven decades especially in the areas of increasing mutual trade and high-level exchanges.

Foreign Minister Qureshi was addressing the commemorative event held in Islamabad to celebrate the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Pakistan and Spain (1951-2021). The event titled “70 Years” was jointly organized by the Embassy of Spain and Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The event was also attended by Ambassador of Spain Manuel Duran, Federal Ministers, Members of Parliament, Foreign Secretary, and general public.

In his address, Shah Mehmood Qureshi highlighted the milestones of the bilateral relations over the past seven decades. Highlighting the connection between the two countries, the foreign minister said that the historic and cultural ties between Pakistan and Spain led to establishment of formal relations.

He also underlined the visit of Pakistan’s national poet, Dr. Allama Muhammad Iqbal, to Spain before partition of the subcontinent, and his admiration and respect for the Spanish culture. He said Iqbal’s respect for the people of Spain was also seen in his poetry.

The foreign minister also highlighted the significance of “public diplomacy, cultural exchanges and fostering people-to-people contacts” for enhanced engagement between Pakistan and Spain.

Recalling his visit to Spain in 2010 and the recent visit of the Spanish Foreign Minister, Shah Mehmood Qureshi expressed contentment at the upward trajectory of the bilateral ties between Islamabad and Madrid.

The Foreign Minister further said that that around 125,000 Pakistanis residing in Spain of was serving as a strong bridge between the two countries.

Among others, the event showcased photographic exhibition and included singing of national anthems of Pakistan and Spain as well as their respective cultural and musical performances.

A special stamp with images of Badshahi mosque and Cordoba mosque will be issued to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the diplomatic relations between Pakistan and Spain.
