Pakistan offers assistance as India records highest COVID cases for four days in a row

Pakistan has offered medical supplies and health assistance to India as the country grapples with an overwhelming wave of COVID-19. India has seen the country report world record high cases for four days in a row.

“As a gesture of solidarity with the people of India in the wake of the current wave of COVID-19, Pakistan has offered to provide relief support to India including ventilators, Bi PAP, digital X-ray machines, PPEs and related items” Pakistan Foreign Office said in a statement.

“We believe in a policy of humanity first” said Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi said.

The concerned authorities of Pakistan and India were asked to work out modalities for quick delivery of the relief items as India is struggling to cope with the virus catastrophe. The two countries “can also explore possible ways of further cooperation to mitigate the challenges posed by the pandemic.”

The offer of assistance comes after Prime Minister Imran Khan’s tweet praying for the “speedy recovery” of the Indian people affected by the virus and calling for cooperation in the fight against the pandemic.

Faisal Edhi, chairman of the Edhi Foundation, also wrote a letter to Indian PM Narendra Modi offering his organization’s help in confronting the epidemic. As a neighboring country, Pakistan’s Edhi foundation extended medical assistance and “a fleet of 50 ambulances” to help manage the humanitarian crisis.

Thousands of Pakistani also expressed their sympathy and solidarity and sent prayers for the people of India with the #PakistanstandswithIndia trending on Twitter.
