Pakistan’s TikTok star hopes to become athlete after viral video of long jump

Athletic Federation of Pakistan has vowed to coach the youngster, Asif Magsi, with world-class potential

There is no dearth of athletic talent in the country and a young guy Asif Magsi has just proving that.

The youngster, who likes to post videos on the famous app TikTok under the name Hero Pakistani, jumped over 11 motorcycles gaining everyone’s attention. The video was viewed hundreds of thousands of times across different social media platforms.  

“I have been doing this for fun and I believe that I can easily touch the 25-feet mark in the long jump, though I have never measured it,” Asif said talking to a local publication.

Asif’s jump is thought to be 22 feet long. The national record for long jump is 25 feet with the Asian record set at 27 feet. Many believe Asif’s giant leap may challenge Mike Powell’s epic 8.95m (29 ft) long jump world record.

“The video posted on Twitter was sort of a fun activity in my native town in Thatta. I am fond of athletics and want to become an athlete. I help my father in the fish business and we travel between Karachi and Thatta for the purpose,” he said.

Noticed by the Athletic Federation of Pakistan

Athletics Federation of Pakistan (AFP) president Maj Gen (r) Akram Sahi saw the video online and was amazed by the raw talent of the youngster. He said that the youngster’s talent needs to be channelized and he can win medals at the international level. He also advised Asif against repeating the stunt as it can lead to injuries.

“There is no denying the fact that Asif has amazing potential and now we want to channelize this potential into a medal winning one at the Asian and world level. The AFP will train him and look after him. A coach will be deputed with him so that he can get the most modern and latest coaching on how to improve on his talent,” Sahi added.

Talent such as Asif can bring laurels home at Asian, as well as the world level. Proper training and investment in the athletes can once again can help the nation in getting back on the world’s athletic map.  

Reaction on Twitter

The video went viral after Kalim Khan first posted it Twitter with this caption: “Imagine finding him, working on him and preparing him for olympics long jump.”

Shaniera Akram, wife of cricketer Wasim Akram, appreciated the talented young man, saying: “Wow he’s incredible. It scares me to think how much undiscovered raw talent we are neglecting.”

Asif Magsi also received applause from Carl Lewis, American track-and-field athlete who won nine Olympic gold medals. “Actually with his lack of fear, he has the perfect mindset” he wrote.
