Peshawar BRT gets International Gold Standard award

The Peshawar Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) has received International Gold Standard Service Award (IGSS) by the technical committee of Bus Rapid Transit Standard, to become the first BRT in the subcontinent to receive the award.

IGSS is the highest internationally recognized standard that any BRT system can achieve and has been awarded to only two other Asian cities and 10 cities globally. BRT technical committee appraises world-class BRTs on the basis of best practices around the globe.

Dr. Walter Hook, a top-level official of the BRT technical committee, presented the award to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Minister for Higher Education Kamran Bangash in an official ceremony held in Peshawar on Thursday. The ceremony was also attended by Member Provincial Assembly Syed Fakhar Jehan, members of the International BRT standard committee, government officials, representatives of the Asian Development Bank (ADB), and others.

Dr. Walter Hook said that BRT Peshawar was consistent in almost all respects in international best practices.

Kamran Bangash said it was a moment of immense pride and honor for Peshawar and the federal government that BRT has achieved the world’s highest possible ranking. He informed that the BRT has also made a world record by obtaining 97 points out of 100 for the IGSS award adding that no other country has so far scored that many points for this award.

Achievements of Peshawar BRT

Peshawar is awarded with the Gold Standard Award on account of the following accomplishments:

  • Transforming transport through its clean technology buses
  • Promoting non-motorized traffic
  • Transporting a staggering 250,000 passengers on daily basis
  • 20% of the total daily passengers are women
  • 60% of low-income people use it for daily commute

International Sustainable Award

Earlier, the BRT had also received the certificate of International Sustainable Award by the International Transport Organisation while the UN Women has also honored the BRT for providing the best and safe traveling facility to women.

About the Peshawar BRT:

The ADB-funded Peshawar BRT was inaugurated in August 2020 by Prime Minister Imran Khan and has been used by more than 71.2 million people since the commencement of operations, according to a senior official of the TransPeshawar.

CEO TransPeshawar Fayyaz Khan said the company would ensure to maintain the Gold Standard by delivering high standard services to the commuters.
