Gilgit-Baltistan demands provincial status for the region

GB Assembly unanimously adopts joint resolution demanding interim provincial status

The Gilgit-Baltistan assembly passed a unanimous resolution on Tuesday demanding the federal government to grant the region the status of an interim province.

The resolution demanded Prime Minister Imran Khan that GB be given representation in the National Assembly and Senate and other federal institutions.

The resolution urged the federal government to declare GB a provisional province of Pakistan by amending the constitution with the parliament’s approval under the UN resolutions so that it does not damage the country’s stance on the Kashmir issue.

The assembly also expressed solidarity for the people of Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir and their freedom struggle.

The resolution was tabled by GB Chief Minister Khalid Khurshid Khan and leader of the opposition in the Assembly as well as some members.

GB Chief Minister Khalid Khurshid Khan said that the assembly unanimously passed a historic resolution demanding provision of constitutional rights to the region.

“The demand for constitutional rights is a unanimous demand of the people of GB, not that of an individual/ party. The unity we’ve shown on this issue needs to be repeated again at a federal level” he said.

Federal Science and Technology Minister Fawad Chaudhry said that it was a historic day for the people of Gilgit-Baltistan. He wrote on Twitter that it was “truly a leap forward”.
