BYD launches Electric Vehicles in Pakistan and announces first NEV assembly plant

BYD, the world’s Energy Vehicle (EV) manufacturer, has officially entered the Pakistani market through a strategic partnership with Mega Motor Company. The move signifies BYD’s commitment to driving Pakistan’s transition towards sustainable mobility.

Chinese EV giant BYD (Build Your Dreams) unveiled three advanced electric vehicle models at a grand brand launch event in Lahore on August 17, 2024, in partnership with Mega Motor Company Private Limited, a subsidiary of Pakistan’s largest private power producer Hub Power Company Limited (HUBCO).

The launch of BYD electric cars and the top Chinese company’s entry into the Pakistani automotive market was earlier reported in this Islamabad Scene article. BYD first announced its formal entry into the Pakistani market in March 2024.

BYD plans to open three flagship stores and experience centers in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad, the company said at a launch event in Lahore.



During the event, Liu Xueliang, General Manager of BYD Asia Pacific Auto Sales Division, highlighted the company’s global expansion efforts. “Our entry into the Pakistani market is not just about bringing advanced vehicles to consumers; it’s about driving a broader vision of environmental responsibility and technological innovation. We believe that our new energy vehicles will play a crucial role in shaping a cleaner and more prosperous future for both Pakistan and the world,” he said.


BYD EV models launched in Pakistan

During the event, three highly anticipated models, which will soon launch in Pakistan, were unveiled: BYD Sealion 6, BYD Seal, and BYD Atto 3. 

The launch event featured interactive exhibits that demonstrated BYD’s technological prowess, including the DM-i Super Hybrid, e-Platform 3.0, and the BYD Blade Battery. The immersive experience underscored BYD’s commitment to fostering a greener tomorrow through innovative solutions.


Grand BYD launch in Pakistan

The grand launch event showcased the company’s latest innovations, emphasizing its mission of “Technological Innovations For A Better Life”. Each of the three models introduced offers a blend of superior performance, advanced features, and environmental sustainability, catering to the evolving needs of Pakistani consumers.

Aly Khan, CEO of Mega Motor Co., expressed his vision for the partnership, aiming to spearhead the green revolution in Pakistan. He emphasized the company’s role in tackling pressing environmental challenges such as air pollution and climate change by aligning with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the government’s vision to increase the use of NEVs.



Speaking on the occasion, Kamran Kamal, CEO of The Hub Power Company Limited, announced plans to establish Pakistan’s first NEV assembly plant, alongside the creation of Hubco Green, an initiative focused on accelerating the green mobility revolution in the country. This includes setting up fast-charging stations across major cities, motorways, and highways to ensure convenience and confidence for NEV users.

The launch event in Lahore’s Expo Center was attended by Finance Minister Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb, who welcomed BYD’s arrival as a milestone in Pakistan’s journey towards sustainability. “BYD’s entry is not just about new vehicles; it’s about embracing a sustainable future and aligning with Pakistan’s environmental goals of achieving energy efficiency,” Aurangzeb stated. He said in his address that the “Government of Pakistan believes technology is the future. BYD has led the way globally and we warmly welcome BYD’s entry into Pakistan’s EV industry and we look forward to facilitating the green revolution in Pakistan.”

With BYD’s global expertise and Mega Motor Co.’s local insight, this launch marks the beginning of a new era in sustainable transportation for Pakistan. The introduction of these NEVs promises a cleaner, greener, and more technologically advanced future for the country.


BYD plans car plant in Karachi as part of Pakistan entry

Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD also announced plans to open a car production plant in Karachi with a local partner to capture a share of Pakistan’s growing EV market.

BYD “will establish Pakistan’s first NEV assembly plant, a state-of-the-art CKD facility dedicated to producing BYD’s cutting-edge New Energy Vehicles,” said Hubco Chief Executive Kamran Kamal, who described the deal as a “landmark investment”. The new plant will begin operations in 2026.

China’s BYD is the world’s largest EV maker

BYD is renowned for its pioneering work in NEV production, having surpassed global competitors in 2022 and 2023 to become the leading seller of new energy vehicles.

The company reached the milestone of its 1 millionth NEV roll-off in May 2021 and has since produced 8 million vehicles in just over three years, making it the world’s first automobile brand to achieve this feat. The brand launch in Pakistan will showcase a range of BYD’s latest models, highlighting their advanced technology and commitment to sustainability.
