China-Pakistan Joint Research Center on Earth Sciences launched in Islamabad

The China-Pakistan Joint Research Center on Earth Sciences (CPJRC) has been established at Quaid-i-Azam University in Islamabad to facilitate new research opportunities focusing on the Himalayan, Hindu Kush, and Karakorum mountain ranges.

Objectives of the CPJRC

The high-level scientific and technological innovation platform, inaugurated October 25, seeks to:

  • Foster sci-tech collaboration between Pakistan and China, focusing on addressing climate-induced disasters and nurturing talent development.
  • Conduct research to provide solutions for sustainable rural economies, societies, environments, and food security.

Climate-induced food security a major concern

Speaking at the event, Pakistan’s caretaker Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research, Kausar Abdullah Malik, highlighted that climate-induced food security is a major concern for Pakistan, adding that the center brings hope in addressing this issue. The establishment of the CPJRC could also revolutionize research in the field of earth sciences, creating opportunities for Pakistani students and scientists, he added.

Geological disasters and climate change impact on CPEC

Speaking at the event, Cui Peng, Director General of CPJRC, said researchers from China and Pakistan will collaborate to analyze the impact of geological disasters and climate change on the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and local sustainable development.

“CPEC areas are vulnerable to frequent natural hazards. Its environment and ecosystem are fragile, and socio-economic development is affected by multiple constraints, affecting local resilience and sustainable development. Addressing these challenges through research and supporting the sustainable development of CPEC is a common goal of scientists from both countries,” said Cui Peng.

Empowering Pakistani academia in Earth Sciences

Shahid Iqbal, an assistant professor at the Earth Sciences Department of Quaid-i-Azam University, told Xinhua that the university plans to construct a dedicated campus building for the center’s operations. Currently, the university has allocated a building for its functioning. He further said that the center is dedicated to proposing strategies for managing climate change impacts and sustainable development initiatives to support Pakistan’s economic growth.

“It is also a very good opportunity for academia in Pakistan and young students who will have access to the modern research in the fields of earth sciences of China,” he added.
