Dr Muhammad Iqbal Choudhary honoured for contributions to Medical Science and Sino-Pak Relations

In a move that highlights the growing scientific cooperation between Pakistan and China, China’s Hunan University of Medicine (HNUM) has inaugurated a new research center named after renowned Pakistani scientist Professor Dr Muhammad Iqbal Choudhary.

This honour is a testament to Dr Choudhary’s contributions to the field of bio-organic chemistry and his efforts to strengthen collaboration between the two nations.

Research Center dedicated to advancing joint projects

The newly named centre will be home to 17 full-time researchers focused on advancing joint research projects between China and Pakistan. In a statement released by the university, officials described the centre as a hub for fostering meaningful collaboration in medical sciences, emphasizing its importance in expanding shared knowledge and resources.

Historic honor

Founded in 1912, Hunan University of Medicine is one of China’s premier public medical universities, with a strong reputation for academic excellence. The institution offers around 20 undergraduate and graduate programmes, supporting a faculty of over 4,500 and a student body of more than 14,000. This latest development underscores HNUM’s commitment to international collaboration in scientific research, especially with Pakistan.

Dr Choudhary’s role in strengthening Sino-Pak scientific relations

Professor Dr Muhammad Iqbal Choudhary, who currently serves as Vice President of the World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) for Central and South Asia, has been instrumental in advocating for scientific cooperation between Pakistani and Chinese researchers. His previous initiatives in establishing research centres and promoting cross-border academic partnerships have laid the groundwork for this new facility.

Award-winning scientist

Over his distinguished career, Dr Choudhary has earned several prestigious awards, including Pakistan’s civil honours — Hilal-i-Imtiaz, Sitara-i-Imtiaz, and Tamgha-i-Imtiaz — as well as the Mustafa Prize and the Friendship Award from China. This centre represents a landmark achievement not only for Dr Choudhary but also for scientific relations between China and Pakistan, reinforcing both countries’ commitment to shared research goals and technological advancement.
