The European Union (EU) has announced another 30 million euros in humanitarian aid to help flood victims in Pakistan, taking its total assistance to around 123 million euros so far.
“With this new funding, the EU reaffirms its continued support to Pakistan and stands by the most vulnerable to help them fulfill basic needs,” European Commissioner for Crisis Management, Janez Lenarcic, said in a statement after meeting with Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
“People in Pakistan are suffering the devastating consequences of an unprecedented flooding emergency. Our thoughts are with those who lost family members, friends and their own homes.”
The EU Commissioner for Crisis Management, Janez Lenarcic, is visiting Pakistan for a first-hand assessment of the destruction caused by floods in the country and the ongoing assistance by the EU. During his visit, he met the affected communities, humanitarian organizations and partners as well as top officials.
The EU funding aims to address urgent needs such as shelter, water and sanitation, food and nutrition, health, protection, education in emergencies and cash assistance, in most affected areas of the country, notably Sindh, Balochistan, Punjab, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
It will also ensure that women, children and other vulnerable people are protected from further harm and that children have again access to education as quickly as possible, the statement further said.
“Mainstreaming disaster preparedness and prevention in EU-funded projects will therefore remain our top priority within the provision of humanitarian assistance,” the statement added.
