The proposed Glass Train project is set to revolutionize tourism in Pakistan by offering a breathtaking journey from Margalla Railway Station in Islamabad to the scenic hills of Murree.
The project, which will connect key destinations like Bhara Kahu, Bhurban, and Galiyat, aims to provide tourists with an unforgettable experience of Pakistan’s natural beauty through panoramic glass windows. With a focus on enhancing tourism and regional growth, the initiative promises to not only boost local economies but also offer a unique travel experience that showcases the stunning landscapes of the Islamabad-Murree corridor.
Punjab Transport Minister reviews Glass Tourist Train Project feasibility
Punjab Minister for Transport Bilal Akbar Khan visited Margalla Railway Station on Monday to review plans for the Glass Tourist Train project. Railway officials briefed the minister on the proposed track connecting Margalla Railway Station to Bastal Mor Murree, extending further to Galiyat and Patriata.
Nespak will finalize the project’s feasibility study by April 30, Khan said, adding that the project is on track for its first-phase feasibility study to be completed on time. Timely completion of the study will pave the way for international tendering under a public-private partnership model, subject to approval.
“The project is feasible as Murree is situated at a height of over 2,200 meters and during the British Raj, a rail link was laid to Shimla in 1906 which is situated at a height of 2,200 meters,” he said.
Key Features of Murree Glass Train Project
The initial phase will involve building a 55-kilometre railway track starting from the Margalla Railway Station in Islamabad. The railway line will connect Islamabad’s Margalla Railway Station to Bhurban, passing through Bhara Kahu, Phurwaha Mor, Ghora Gali, and Jhika Gali.
Equipped with a cog-and-pinion rack and advanced safety mechanisms, the track will ensure smooth operations on steep terrains. A central track will be installed between the main tracks as a safety mechanism, allowing the train to handle elevation changes of one foot per 12 feet of track. These design features will ensure reliable and secure operations, even on steep and difficult terrains.
Tourism and Regional Growth
Positioned as a flagship tourism initiative, the train is expected to boost domestic and international travel along the Islamabad-Murree corridor. Inspired by India’s Jammu-Srinagar-Baramulla link, the project underscores Pakistan’s commitment to infrastructure and tourism development.
The Murree Tourist Glass Train is anticipated to enhance connectivity, attract tourism, and bolster regional economic growth, marking a significant step in Pakistan’s development landscape.
“The tourist glass train will provide travel facilities to tourists as well as locals. The tourist glass train will further promote tourism,” Kahn said.
