Hutchison Ports Pakistan leads sustainability with new Electric Trucks in port operations

Hutchison Ports Pakistan has achieved a significant milestone in the country’s port industry by becoming the first deep-water container terminal to deploy electric trucks (e-Trucks) as part of its ongoing commitment to sustainable logistics practices.

With the introduction of six e-Trucks at the South Asia Pakistan Terminal (SAPT) at located at South Wharf, Karachi Port, the company is reinforcing its efforts to reduce the carbon footprint of its operations, while also enhancing efficiency at the port.

Major Step toward Low-Carbon Future

This move to incorporate e-Trucks into daily operations is a key component of Hutchison Ports Pakistan’s broader low-carbon strategy. In addition to the electric trucks, the terminal already employs Electric Rubber-Tyred Gantry Cranes (ERTGCs), which are integral to the company’s push for sustainability. These advancements are all in line with Hutchison Ports’ global commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

“Hutchison Ports Pakistan has always been at the forefront of innovation, ensuring that our investment drives both competitiveness and environmental responsibility,” said CS Kim, Head of Business Unit at Hutchison Ports Pakistan. “With the adoption of electric trucks and equipment, we are not just improving efficiency—we are setting a new benchmark for sustainability in Pakistan’s port sector.”

Expanding the Fleet by 2025

Hutchison Ports Pakistan plans to further expand its electric fleet, with plans to add 12 more e-Trucks by mid-2025. The company is also preparing to introduce Pakistan’s first electric empty container handler, a move that will further elevate its green logistics efforts. This initiative will position the terminal as a leader in sustainable practices in the region.

Karachi Port Trust welcomes the initiative

The Karachi Port Trust (KPT) has welcomed Hutchison Ports Pakistan’s forward-thinking initiative, noting that the introduction of e-Trucks at SAPT makes Karachi Port the first in Pakistan to adopt this environmentally friendly solution. This transition to electric-powered machinery is expected to significantly reduce carbon emissions, contribute to cleaner air, and improve operational efficiency across the terminal.

“This initiative will further strengthen the port’s commitment towards the sustainable logistics and this green initiative makes the Karachi Port the first to have such a facility in Pakistan,” KPT added.

The shift to electric vehicles and equipment is also seen as a pivotal step in meeting Pakistan’s environmental goals, particularly as the country works to address the challenges of climate change and promote greener infrastructure.

Paving the Way for Future Sustainability in Pakistan

With the successful integration of electric trucks and equipment at SAPT, Hutchison Ports Pakistan is leading the way in transforming the logistics and port industry toward a more sustainable future. The company’s efforts are not only setting new standards for environmental responsibility but are also inspiring other ports in the region to consider similar sustainable practices.

As the terminal continues to expand its electric fleet and green initiatives, Hutchison Ports Pakistan’s commitment to innovation and sustainability will likely inspire broader industry adoption of eco-friendly solutions, contributing to Pakistan’s long-term environmental and economic goals.
