Islamabad hosts Record-Breaking Ultra-Marathon
The 4th Edition of the Margalla Backyard Ultra 2024 (MBU) captivated ultra-running enthusiasts at Islamabad’s F9 Park, showcasing extraordinary endurance and determination.
Organized by the Margalla Trail Runners (MTR), the event witnessed participation from 108 runners, including children and international athletes, in a grueling competition that lasted an astonishing 35 hours.
- Israr Khattak claimed the title of ‘last one standingʼ after completing 35 loops (234.5 KM), breaking the previous year’s record of 34 loops. His exceptional performance underscores Pakistan’s rising prominence in the global ultra-running community.
- Athar Akhtar, the second man standing, completed 34 loops (228 KM)
- Anja Myrtveit, the last woman standing, showcased remarkable grit by completing 15 loops (100 KM).
Community Spirit and International Recognition
The event not only highlighted athletic achievements but also celebrated community spirit.
Javed Ali, Founder of MTR, expressed his gratitude, saying: “Big thanks to all the runners, supporters, and volunteers for making the Margalla Backyard Ultra such an amazing event! You all brought the energy and determination—see you on the routes next time!”
International participant Thomas from Switzerland praised the event’s atmosphere: “I flew halfway across the globe to be at this event, and I don’t regret a second of it—it was absolutely worth it!”
Local participant Muzammil Shahzad emphasized the broader impact of such gatherings, stating: “Events like this are so important for keeping the community active, healthy, and connected.”
