Cooperation in energy, industrial modernization, railways and aviation discussed
Pakistan is keen to expedite progress and finalize agreement with Russia on Pakistan Stream (formerly known as North-South) gas pipeline.
Prime Minister Imran Khan reaffirmed the resolve to expeditiously conclude the requisite legal process for the energy project and commence the work as early as possible following his meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
This is the first visit to Pakistan by a Russian foreign minister in almost a decade.
PM Khan reiterated the importance Pakistan attached to its relations with Russia as a key foreign policy priority and expressed satisfaction at the steady growth in bilateral ties, including deepening cooperation in trade, energy, security and defense.
The two sides are also exploring collaboration in industrial modernization, railways, and aviation sectors. Pakistan-Russia inter-governmental commission will be meeting in Moscow later this year to pursue progress on economic collaboration.
Sergey Lavrov said that “We are making necessary efforts to start the construction of the North-South gas pipeline – the flagship project in the energy sector and hope that all remaining technical issues will be agreed upon in the very near future.”
