President Alvi inaugurates STEM program for students

The training program will be initially launched in fifty government higher secondary schools.

President Dr. Arif Alvi on Wednesday launched STEM program for higher secondary school students, in a bid to promote STEM education in government schools.

Addressing a ceremony, the president stressed the need to focus on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) subjects in the education sector, saying it was important for the country and people to progress.

“China produces around 4.7 million graduates in STEM subjects every, while India produces around 2.6 million and Iran 350,000. And where do we stand?” the president said, adding that he believed that the number of STEM graduates was lower in Pakistan.

As a model project, the Ministry of Information and Technology will launch the training program in fifty government higher secondary schools. The program will impart training to the students in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths.

According to the Minister for Information and Broadcasting, 450 government schools will be converted into STEM schools in the initial stage of the project because, without significant up-gradation of government schools, the country would not excel.

More schools will follow after the implementation of the project on the first 450 schools, said Chaudhary Fawad.

Under the STEM program, guidance will be provided to students of Matric and FSC in the above-mentioned fields. The students to undergo this training will be selected on the basis of their talent and ability.

The program would be implemented across the country including Azad Jammu and Kashmir and would prove to be a game-changer.
