From 771 to 189 a day – Islamabad COVID-19 cases come down due to smart lockdown

Some areas have been de-sealed in the federal capital including Karachi Company

A smart lockdown implemented in Islamabad is paying rich dividends as the number of daily reported cases has decreased significantly. The city administration recently sealed a number of areas that were serving as the hotbed of spreading the virus. Some of the areas have been de-sealed while others will be opened in coming days.

Areas de-sealed at midnight Sunday include G-9 Markaz, famously known as Karachi Company, and two sub-sectors G-9/2 and G-9/3. The city administration is also planning on de-sealing other areas after a period of two weeks.

“After completion of 14 days, Sectors I-8/3, I-8/4, I-10/1 and I-10/2 will also be opened soon within this week as the policy of locking down sectors may not eradicate the diseases completely but it surely is flattening the curve,” said Hamza Shafqaat, the Deputy Commissioner of Islamabad.

Fewer Cases

The number of daily new cases in Islamabad have been lower in the last few days. At its peak, Islamabad was reporting over 400 cases a day. The most number of cases in a single day were reported at 771.

However, during the last 24 hours, only 189 cases were reported in the federal capital. Three thousand tests were conducted during the same time period.

New cases reported on June 26 and June 27 were 271 and 225, respectively, showing a clear downward trend. G-6, G-7 as well as 10 subsectors, and two sealed phases of Ghouri Town have also shown lower numbers of COVID-19. Thus far, over 100,000 tests for coronavirus have been conducted in Islamabad.

SOPs violators fined

The city administration is constantly ensuring that the SOPs laid down for businesses are being followed. So far, 102 restaurants/hotels and 456 shops have been sealed for violations. 107 people have also been arrested thus far. Illegal sellers have also been fined over a million rupees by the authorities.
